The Concept Stage of New Products Development Process

By Hector Olvera, MBA, Certified Project Director - PMP

The purpose of the concept stage is only to evaluate the potential of new products opportunity. There is not enough data available yet, so the desicion takers must deal with uncertainty.

New Product Development Process - The Concept Stage

The purpose of the concept stage is to rapidly evaluate a new product opportunity.

This activity will be performed by a product champion with support from others in the organization as needed.

The deliverable in this Stage is the Product Concept Proposal which is presented to the Product Review Board at the concept review.

The product concept proposal of the concept stage may include:

  1. Description of product concept and compelling/unique selling proposition
  2. Initial market opportunity assessment
  3. Competitive overview
  4. Technical assessment
  5. Preliminary financial analysis
  6. Proposed schedules
  7. Recommended core team members

Someone, normally the Champion of the idea, must present a sale pitch to the board, explaining why this product is the best thing the company may do, and have enough argument to close the deal.

If approved at the concept review, the product program will be staffed and scheduled based on the availability of the project core team members.  The project will then enter the definition/business case stage.

If it is NOT approved, the board must notify the reason of the rejection, so that new proposal avoid any mistake that may be cause of rejection. Examples of rejection may be: poor market research, not enough data, product is not wanted by any potential customer, not ROI data available...
